This week I wanted to do something a little funky and festive.  I bought this blazer at a thrift store in Harajuku, Japan; I love the colors and the linen material.  The bright colors are perfect for the fun and cheery holiday season (Cynicism at best).  It’s the most wonderful expensive time of the year and I’m not into all the holiday hype. I don’t think Christmas gifts have to be expensive, they should be thoughtful.  If you agree check out my top three consignment/ thrift stores in New York: 1.  Tokio 7   2. Dear: Rivington +  3. Screaming Mimi’s This is a great way to do some stylish shopping without going over your budget.  While shopping I would look for three things:  style, quality and functionality.  A lot of these consignment/ thrift stores have affordable items at great prices but they would only be fit for Lady Gaga’s closet (haha).  Be practical & Be stylish.

I know that a popular gift this season will be the iPhone 4s.  I bought this Michael Kors iPhone clutch recently, its dope because it’s a clutch you can throw in your bag or wear to the club. It holds my iPhone, credit cards, and money.  This is an example of a thoughtful gift that’s worth the price (Under $100).  You can get it from The Michael Kors store or online … I would suggest getting it from Apple same price & free shipping.
And finally… Let’s talk about what I’ve been listening to lately :) .  Kid Sister just released her four-track EP Kiss & Tell.  The EP features one free track “Mickey” which you can download below.  The Kiss & Tell EP goes perfectly with my funky festive mood.  It features verses from Riff Raff and Fool’s Gold’s Danny Brown,  and production from Nadastrom and Scoop Deville.  My faves are Mickey (Free Track) and Hide & Seek.  Listen to the Kiss & Tell EP below and you can purchase the entire EP via Itunes.

This week I wanted to do something a little laid back and mellow.  This outfit was inspired by two words:  simplicity and style. I wanted to do an everyday look…something you can wear from day to night.  I think there’s a lot of beauty in simplicity, in college I even wrote a piano piece called “The Beauty of Simplicity” ( I should probably look for that).  Anyway, I wanted this look to reflect my chill mood inspired by the NYC Fall weather and the Lost & Found EP by Lianne La Havas.  Lianne La Havas is an English singer/ songwriter, she just released her first EP last month, and I love it! It’s a fresh new sound… very refreshing.   Ok so originally I had the Lost & Found EP streaming below but it wasn’t working :( So check out Lianne La Havas’ newest release ‘Live in LA’ until I can get the original Lost & Found EP up & running again! Enjoy :)

MY OLD SCHOOL HIP HOP & REGGAE STYLE MIX

Recently I’ve been inspired by a lot of Old School Hip Hop and Reggae, and the music has influenced my style.  This week’s look is all about remixing the past.  For example, my over-sized fur jacket, stone wash jeans, and the silk scarf head tie were all a part of the 80′s – 90′s Hip Hop style.  I remixed these classic items by adding my black and gold bag, brown rope belt, statement chain and the black boots.  Some of the tracks I’ve been listening to lately are Supercat ‘Ghetto Red Hot’, Sly & Robbie ‘Bad Girls Dub’, Doug E. Fresh ‘Freaks’ and Heavy D ‘Somebody For Me’.

Yesterday, I came across this Major Lazer, Beastie Boys and Santigold remix of ‘Don’t Play No Game’.  It’s a great mash up of Hip Hop and Reggae.  I did a style shoot inspired by the Beastie Boys album Hot Sauce Committee Part Two in a previous post,  so I was glad to hear this Dancehall inspired version of the single ‘Don’t Play No Game’.  I love the Beastie Boy’s classic Old School Hip Hop flow mixed with Major Lazer’s Reggae Dancehall tunes… it’s a nice blend.  Check out the mix and free download below.  Hope you enjoy the music & my Hip Hop/ Reggae inspired style!

Check out my Fall inspired look featuring my favorite go-to sweater from Åhléns, and my Club Monaco clutch.  I’m really glad that I got to shoot this outfit in the Meatpacking district because I love this area’s rustic look, cobblestones, bricks and metals.  The mix of these materials are similar to my outfit’s mix of colors, patterns and textures.  The Meatpacking District was the perfect complement to my Fall look and Taprikk Sweezee ‘s track below.

Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Hip Hop inspired tracks with a twist of something else.  I think it’s so dope when producers add layers of surprising elements to their tracks.  The combination of the different sounds makes the music more interesting and unique.  Recently I came across German producer and vocalist Taprikk Sweezee, and his ‘Mercury E.A.R.L. Minamata Remix’ This track is fresh! if you’re looking for something different and Hip Hop inspired check out the free download below. Enjoy!

This weekend I decided to spice things up a little by traveling to one of New York City’s many forgotten islands – Roosevelt Island.  I love being on an island, not just because I am from Jamaica but I really like being surrounded by big bodies of water.  One thing I learned from traveling in the Caribbean is every island has it’s own vibe.  I was very curious to find out what sort of vibe I would find on Roosevelt Island.  After spending a few hours shooting photos around RI, I realized that this island is Manhattan’s hidden gem with amazing views of the city,  fresh fruit stands, and great local art work.

Speaking of island vibes… Check out Federation Sound’s new release The Flatlands Remix Project out on October 18, 2011.  It features remixed reggae tracks from producers all over the world.  My favorites are: Flippa Mafia “Mus Fly Again” (Sgruzzy Moohmbahton Remix), Prince Zimboo “Shut Off” (The Drill Player’s Remix) and Mr. Vegas and Natalie Storm “Doggy” (Nick Catchdubs Remix).  The Flatlands Remix Project is a mash up of a lot of different elements & sounds combined with Reggae! Love this! Also Download The wicked Sickhead Remix of Ward21′s “Go Easy” and Mr. Vegas and Natalie Storm “Doggy” (Nick Catchdubs Remix) (Track 3 & 6)  for free below. Enjoy!
